The teaching profession has always been considered by everyone as a dignified, honorable and an important calling for the betterment of society. It has also been considered to the be one of the vanguards of a moral society. The idea of a university education, in itself, once implied a prestigious and worthy sacrifice, as it promised to train the mind to pursue the truth through historical analysis, novel research, and educated debate. Is this still true today? I truly hope so.
Unfortunately, today it takes little effort to find instances where educational institutions have become the means by which young minds are coerced into thinking as those who teach them. In many universities, not only have students become inadequate in formulating their own ideas, but they have also been ostracized if the ideas they do explore differ from the teacher's own agenda. Recent protests and classroom disruptions at our elite universities are a perfect example of this—most students are ill-informed and inarticulate in presenting their own demands for "justice”.
Having our children gain an educated world view needs to begin at home. The parents, every child's first and most influential educators, must take this responsibility seriously. However, with more than fifty percent of families having just one parent at home to take on the challenge of educating their children, we must find ways to support their efforts by ensuring that what is being taught by society's powerful—media, government institutions, local school boards, special interest groups, and yes, the church—has your child's best interest in mind. We must know what is being taught at our schools and universities, and if inaccurate or immoral, we must speak up. If we don't advocate for them, for our society, or whatever we hold of value, who will? As we send our children off to school, whether it’s Kindergarten or college, one must wonder, "Have I done enough?"
In the end, it is God who will judge how well we taught our children. But let's not forget, that no matter if it's from in front of a podium, a pulpit, or our dining room table, it is He who warned us:
"Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it is better for that person to tie a millstone around his neck and be drowned in the depths of the sea." (Mt 18:6)
May God bless our children. And may He always be an important part of their lives.
